Kennesaw Mountain (GA) defensive-end/linebacker Taariq Shabazz made it out to East Carolina for a visit this week. Bradley Harwood spoke with him about it and the latest.

Taariq Shabazz has been seeing raised interest from college coaches. He now has 10 offers to his name and is beginning to make some visits in order to learn about the schools that have offered him. Shabazz visited the ECU this week.

"I went for an unofficial visit and toured campus," the 6-foot-4 240 pound Shabazz said. "I met with Head Coach Ruffin McNeill and Defensive Coordinator Rick Smith. They spoke with me about the program and I got to see all of the facilities, it was really nice."

Living in Kennesaw Mountain, Georgia has affected Shabazz's ability to know much about the Pirates of ECU. He said his visit was beneficial and helped him learn more about the school and the program.

"I learned that is was a family (oriented) program," he said. "I could feel how big football was in the community and got to learn more about the school. I just stayed for one day, but got to talk to a few players and coaches. I enjoyed my time there."

The recruiting process has been anything but quiet for Shabazz and more offers have come in recently.

"I'm at ten total offers," Shabazz said. "Southern Mississippi, Duke, Georgia State, Georgia Southern, Vanderbilt, Western Kentucky, Central Florida, Cincinnati and East Carolina are all the schools that have extend offers."

As far as his interest in ECU, Shabazz thinks highly of the Pirates and has them at the top of his list.

"My top three schools are ECU, Duke and Vanderbilt," he said. "I like those schools because of their mix between good academics and a good football program." Shabazz went on to say he still plans on majoring in business or sports management.

Last season Shabazz finished with 49 tackles, 16 tackles for loss, and four and a half sacks. Improving in the sacks category his senior year is something he is working hard to do. He said he has been working out with his team and focusing on improving his first step off of the snap.

June hasn't been too hectic for Shabazz, but he plans on seeing more schools as the summer progresses.

"I am going to go on a few more visits and to more camps in July," he said. "I'm heading to Southern Mississippi and Vanderbilt, I just haven't figured out exactly when."

Originally Shabazz planned on committing sometime in August. He has started to have a slight change of heart.

"I am not sure exactly when anymore," he said. "I might actually push it back to September. There's a chance I could pick up more offers and I need the time to take more visits so I can properly evaluate my options."

Shabazz is a bright spot on a Kennesaw Mountain team that has won six games in the past four seasons. He has good size and athleticism making him a great potential pickup for the Pirates if it all works out. There's still plenty of time for him to make his decision, but as of right now ECU is high in this recruit's mind.
