East Carolina got its seventh verbal commit for the 2014 class in Ocean Lakes (Virginia Beach, Va.) outside linebacker/defensive end Massadiq Walton last week. Inside ECU Sports spoke with him about his decision.

After holding two offers, one from Navy and one from ECU, Ocean Lakes outside linebacker/defensive end Massadiq Walton has committed to a school.

Last Friday he committed to ECU making him the seventh commit for the 2014 class and the first from Virginia (at the time). Inside linebackers coach John Wiley should get an assist for Walton’s commitment.

“It was last Friday (August 9), I called and talked to coach (John) Wiley,” the 6-foot-3, 260-pound Walton said. “We talked about how things were going and after I told him I wanted to commit. He was very excited and wanted to get me on the phone with other coaches who were excited too. We talked about getting me down to ECU for a visit as well.”

ECU sophomore offensive lineman Chaz Lowery and freshman defensive lineman Demetri McGill are both former teammates of Walton. He said that played a role in his commitment.

“I only had the two offers so it wasn’t the hardest decision,” he said. “I knew ECU was a good program and the position they want me at fits me well so it was an easy choice. They’re going to have me as a kind of defensive hybrid switching between linebacker and defensive end.”

Although he’s seen plenty of pictures, it may come as a surprise that Walton has never visited ECU. He said he’s seen the weight room and Dowdy-Ficklen and is confident he’ll like it there.

Walton is still trying to coordinate a trip to Greenville and mentioned he will hopefully make it sometime in the near future.

Originally Walton planned to wait until signing day to choose a school, but he had a change of heart.

“I was talking with my head coach (Chris Scott)” Walton said. “He said if I commit now I can still get offers later, so I went ahead committed. I doubt I’ll de-commit and go somewhere else, but it could happen.”

Joining his future teammates is a ways away and Walton hasn’t thought about when exactly he’ll be at ECU. With that being said, he’s enthusiastic about the opportunity and is eager to become a new member of the Pirate Nation.

“It feels good,” he said. “I’m pretty excited to become a Pirate and play some defense. I’m mainly excited to get out there hit somebody.”

With Shaun James from Green Run committing today, defensive commits now lead the way for ECU in the 2014 class with five of the eight of them playing on that side of the ball. Walton is a versatile pickup for ECU and saw time at multiple positions last season including offensive line.
