2014 Cardinal Gibbons (Raleigh, N.C.) quarterback Shawn Stankavage picked up an offer from ECU and will visit soon. Inside ECU Sports spoke with him about the Pirates.

When ECU's only quarterback commit for the 2014 class, Bishop Kenny (FL) qb John Wolford, de-committed in December it set the Pirates back at square one for the position.

As a result, some of ECU's coaches hit the recruiting trail last week to visit with other potential recruits at the quarterback position and an offer has been sent out.

Pro-style quarterback Shawn Stankavage from Cardinal Gibbons (Raleigh, N.C) had a visit from offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley and outside receivers coach Dave Nichol over the weekend. Later that night he received his offer.

"ECU has been in contact for a while now and most schools have fallen off besides them," said the 6-foot-2, 185-pound Stankavage. "Coach Riley told me he wanted me to be a Pirate. ECU is my number one school and is close with Vanderbilt."

Stankavage holds offers from North Carolina Central, Presbyterian, Albany and ECU. He had an offer from Wyoming which isn't valid anymore and Vanderbilt could be the next to offer.

As far as his knowledge of ECU goes, Stankavage mentioned he has visited before and really enjoyed the atmosphere. Now that he has an offer, he and the coaching staff have planned an official visit to campus Jan. 24.

The only area of concern for the Pirates if Stankavage commits may be keeping him healthy – he tore his ACL in his junior season. Luckily for ECU, Stankavage had a huge senior season in response to his injury.

He had 3,564 yards passing with 34 touchdowns and 14 interceptions and added 1,058 yards rushing with 13 touchdowns.

This shows that while he is a pro-style quarterback mainly, Stankavage is known for his ability to makes plays outside of the pocket. His idol is Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton, but he likes to try and model his game after Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel.

The similarities are so strong that Stankavage's friends call him "Shawny Football" after Manziel's famous nickname (Johnny Football).

Newton and Manziel are both known for making some questionable decisions with the football and at times many have questioned their mental toughness. That's where Stankavage is different.

As a signal-caller he thrives on keeping his head in the game.

"My best asset as a QB is composure," said Stankavage. "I'm the calm, cool and collected guy. When things aren't going the way we want I have to be the one to calm everyone down. On the field I just enjoy myself and like to have fun whether as a pocket passer or scrambler.

Stankavage told Scout he will make his decision after his official visit to ECU, but hasn't chosen a date yet. All signs point to the Pirates hopefully adding a fully committed quarterback for the 2014 class.
