It hasn’t been a year since Jeff Compher took over the reigns as East Carolina’s Director of Athletics, but he already has a blue-print in place for the Pirates’ future.
Compher revealed the department’s “Undaunted” strategic plan for the next three-to-five years Tuesday afternoon. The plan will serve as a reference for decision-making and operational efforts as ECU transitions into the American Athletic Conference this summer.
“What ‘Undaunted’ means to me is being fearless in the face of challenges; to be bold, and confident and to go forth when you know there are going to be challenges out there,” Compher told reporters. “I think that defines our athletics program and really defines our university.”
“It speaks to who we are as a program and our history and the legacy of our program that we take on a lot of challenges as a program and we always seem to come out on top.”
“Undaunted” also outlines ECU’s “Pirate Creed” and code in simplified terms.
The creed says the Pirates are “Undaunted” in their passion, service and in building leaders and winning championships. The Pirates’ code uses the acronym “FIRST,” which stands for family, integrity, respect, student-athletes and teamwork.
Although this plan has been in the works before Compher succeeded Terry Holland last May, many believe it was his contagious personality that got the job finished in such a timely manner.
“He’s obviously come in guns blazing,” said ECU men’s basketball coach Jeff Lebo. “I think in the first six months he has come in and evaluated different things and saw areas of strengths and areas of weaknesses that we need to attack as a department. He’s really been driven and I’ve really been impressed with his work habits and his drive to take East Carolina to the next level.”
The timing of this decision was important for Compher. The Pirates enjoyed their first postseason tournament title in men’s basketball last season and just their second 10-win campaign on the gridiron.
Having this plan in place just months before switching conferences, ECU hopes it can continue the momentum it has built over the last year.
“When you think about the momentum we have, (the timing) makes a lot of sense doesn’t it,” Compher said. “We have a lot of competitive excellence going on right now and I feel really good about that.”
