Recruiting Breakdown: RB's
July 14 marked the end of the most recent dead period for ECU football recruiting. With the window of communication back open coaches will begin to pursue more top targets at key positions. The Achilles heel in recruiting for ECU has always been the running back position. Aside from the landing of Chris Johnson, arguably the most talented running back to ever play at ECU, the Pirates have struggled in recent memory to land a running back commit early on in a class’ recruitment. 2015 has been no different, with August approaching ECU has yet to lock up a commit at running back. It could be due to the spread offense coordinator Lincoln Riley runs, it could be something else, the important thing to note is coaches are hoping to end the pattern and get a commit at the running back position as soon as possible. With all that being said, ECU is making strides with one of its top targets. Let’s break down where the Pirates stand with their current 2015 running back targets they’ve offered. Running backs South Central (Winterville, N.C.) running back Shawn Furlow: As of right now Shawn Furlow is the running back ECU has the best chance of landing. Speaking with him recently showed no change in his interests, ECU is still number one. Right now Furlow is focusing on schoolwork and preparing for his season. He has visited ECU close to ten times and will visit again this fall, for the Pirates it could be a match made in heaven. Furlow is discussing his school options with his parents right now, but there is a chance he ends up at ECU when it is all said and done. Wake Forest-Rolesville (N.C.) running back Bryce Love:Recruiting Bryce Love has been extremely difficult for ECU to this point. For a long stretch of time Love was the Pirates’ No.1 overall target, but with so many schools on his trail it seems to be a long shot. He’s being heavily pursued by schools like Florida, N.C. State, Stanford, Carolina, Tennessee, South Carolina and the list goes on. Pearl Cohn (Nashville, TN) running back Ke’Shawn Vaughn: ECU left an impression on Ke’Shawn Vaughn when he visited during the spring. However, Vaughn has since taken many visits to other schools like Louisville, Illinois, Kentucky and Vanderbilt. Vandy has emerged as the current leader in his interests. Don’t be surprised if ECU makes another push on Vaughn by inviting out for a game day experience this fall. Charlotte (Punta Gorda, Fla.) running back Elijah Mack: Elijah Mack could be a name to watch out for moving forward. He currently holds three offers including ones from ECU, UCF and Cincinnati. This fall will be big in Mack’s recruitment as he has yet to visit either of the three schools interested. ECU could continue contact and extend a game day invitation if it is interested.
