Recruiting Breakdown: Defensive Linemen

Recruiting Breakdown: Defensive Linemen

ECU has three defensive linemen commits for the 2015 class, but more could pledge to the Pirates before it is all said and done. Inside ECU Sports has a look at some of the top defensive linemen targets ECU is interested in moving forward.

Head coach Ruffin McNeill and the Pirate coaching staff have never had a problem recruiting defensive linemen. In fact, next to the offensive linemen, the defensive line has been the easiest position for ECU to pick up commits from in its last two classes.

For the class of 2014 ECU had six different defensive linemen commits – the Pirates are halfway to that point with the class of 2015.

Kettle Run (Va.) defensive end Abu Kai Kai, Ayden Grifton (N.C.) defensive tackle Justin Brown and Amos P. Godby (Fla.) defensive end Danny Thomas are ECU’s three 2015 commits at the position so far. With recruiting back in full swing the coaches will likely try and lock up two or three more commits for the class.

Here are some defensive linemen targets still left on the board for ECU’s class of 2015:

Middle Creek (Apex, N.C.) defensive end Terry Patterson:

ECU has success with recruiting from Middle Creek, arguably its most talented wide receiver commit for the 2014 class in Curtis Burston played there. Patterson is a prospect ECU will keep a close eye on this fall and he could even visit for a game. With schools like UNC Charlotte, Georgia Southern, James Madison and Old Dominion showing him a lot of interest the Pirates see an opportunity to add another defensive line commit.

JUCO (Navarro College) defensive end Desmond Owino:

Brandon Jones is in charge of Owino’s recruitment and is pursuing him heavily. Originally from Raleigh, Owino committed and signed with N.C. State out of high school. Now that he has landed on the JUCO route schools are still showing him attention. He will likely visit ECU this fall for a game day experience.

Madisonville (TX) defensive tackle Austin Ashley:

No school has offered Austin Ashley yet, but plenty of them are paying attention to the talented lineman. Ball State, Baylor, Houston, Michigan State and ECU have all shown interest. This fall will be an important time for his recruitment and the Pirates could reach out to him soon.

Millbrook (Raleigh, N.C.) defensive end Kengera Daniel:

After a spring game visit to ECU Daniel was impressed. Since then the talented prospect with tremendous size (6’5, 250 lbs) has seen the best programs in the country pursue him. He recently picked up offers from Alabama, Michigan, Miami, Kentucky and Indiana. It may be safe to say Daniel is out of the question for ECU.
