ECU added another 2015 commit Friday in Cardinal Gibbons (Fla.) safety/outside linebacker C.J. Maybin. Inside ECU Sports spoke with him about the decision.

With all hands on deck and the first game just 15 days away, ECU coaches should be ecstatic to hear they have a new 2015 commit. Cardinal Gibbons safety/outside linebacker C.J. Maybin pledged to the Pirates Friday morning.

“I was sleeping and all of the sudden my mom rushed into my room,” said the 6-foot-4, 195-pound Maybin. “She told me to call (ECU outside linebacker) coach (Duane) Price now and commit because it was her birthday. My coaches agree ECU is the place for me, so I made the call.”

Pirate fans and coaches alike should be excited about Maybin’s decision from the get-go. He brings tremendous length to any position on the field with his 6-foot-4 frame. It’s also nice to add he committed to the school before ever visiting – he plans to make it out during a bye week this season

Schools Ohio, Georgia State, Florida International and Syracuse all offered Maybin, but the Pirates stood out to him most.

“I chose ECU because they weren’t like Syracuse offering so many players,” said Maybin. “They only offered me and another kid from Tampa down here for safety and they were waiting to hear from me first. Of all the schools ECU gave me the most attention.”

ECU not only gave Maybin the most attention, coaches have also agreed to give him a shot at the safety position. They mentioned if it doesn’t work out they may move him to middle linebacker due to his length for coverage and blitzing.

When a recruit commits this early on there is always a chance for decommitment, Maybin is no exception. As of right now he stands by his decision, but if an ACC or SEC program comes knocking things could change.

“Honestly right now I am not sure what I would do (if a bigger school offered),” said Maybin. “I want to slow things down for a bit. I am very excited not to worry about anything because I will be taken care of wherever I go. I’m excited to be a Pirate.”
