This and That

Posted Dec 15, 2004

Like many, I have been wondering to myself just what Skip Holtz will accomplish as head coach of ECU’s football team, and like you all I can do is speculate.

However, my gut feeling is that he is the right guy for this crucial time in Pirate football history. His hiring of Steve Shankweiler, Donnie Thompson, and Junior Smith only enhance his position in my book.

I don’t know whether or not Holtz’s experience as head coach at Connecticut has any bearing on the Pirates’ hopes of a Big East Conference invite, but I do hope that there is some pull there.

Meanwhile the ECU men’s basketball team continues to struggle, losing to old CAA foe Old Dominion at home. Bill Herrion’s squad is an enigma. After impressive wins against Oregon State and Pepperdine, ECU has losses against teams that they should have beaten including a blowout at the hands of Gardner Webb. It’s still early in the season, but the road is not going to get any easier, especially once conference play begins.
