Mazey back to ECU?

Posted Jul 1, 2002

Tennessee assistant coach Randy Mazey has emerged as the top candidate to become baseball coach at East Carolina University, according to a Raleigh News & Observer report.

Mazey would replace Keith LeClair who stepped as coach in late June. He has amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease.

Mazey was interviewed for the post last week.

ECU chancellor William Muse had to approve the selection this morning, and a conference call was tentatively scheduled with the board of trustees for this afternoon. An official announcement could be made later today, The Raleigh News & Observer reported Monday.

Mazey, 36, has the head coaching experience that ECU athletics director Mike Hamrick has a record of seeking. Mazey, a former All-ACC choice during his career as an outfielder/pitcher at Clemson (1986-88), was Big South Conference coach of the year at Charleston Southern in 1996.

Mazey was an assistant to LeClair at ECU in 1998, recruiting players such as Lee Delfino, Chad Tracy, Nick Schnabel, Erik Bakich and James Molinari -- key personnel during the Pirates' current run of four straight NCAA Tournament berths.

Growing fan support and plans for a new stadium helped make the ECU position attractive when LeClair stepped aside to become an adviser to Hamrick. LeClair was consulted in the search process and supported the hiring of Mazey.

Mazey was drafted by the Cleveland Indians and played professionally for two seasons. He has been an assistant at Clemson (1990-93), Georgia (1997) and at Tennessee since 1999. The Volunteers defeated the Pirates at Grainger Stadium in Kinston for a berth in the College World Series in 2001. Mazey has coached the pitchers and directed recruiting at Tennessee.
