Name: Tyrell Worthington
Hometown: Winterville, North Carolina
High School: South Central High School
Position: Running Back/Safety
NOTES: One of the state's most explosive players, Tyrell Worthington dominated the competition during a stellar senior season.
He rushed for 2,591 yards as a senior with 28 touchdowns, averaging 8.1 yards per carry. A 2006 Shrine Bowl selection, Worthington could also help in the defensive backfield.
However, he is regarded as an elite baseball prospect, and Worthington might be selected in the first five rounds of the upcoming draft.
He is another great in-state pickup for the Pirates.
WORTHINGTON QUOTE: "I’m thinking about playing cornerback anyways. You get to make big plays there and turn the game around with a big interception."
COACH QUOTE: "I know his numbers don't sound like much when you compare him to some other guys you've probably heard about. But basically the biggest guy he had up front blocking for him was 180 pounds, so he does a lot of that on his own. You should see some of the moves he does.
"I feel kind of bad for him because if he had bigger linemen in front of him there's no telling what he could do. I think he can play running back on the next level because of his vision, but he's an athlete.
"He plays free safety for us and is very, very good back there. He doesn't come off the field except for extra points. If he had the right license, he would drive the team bus." -- South Central head coach Kemp Ewing
SCOUTING REPORT: "At 6-0, 185 pounds and boasting 4.47-second speed in the 40-yard dash, Tyrell Worthington has prototypical size for a college cornerback. In high school, Worthington has excelled whether it be at defensive back, running back or quarterback. He has explosive quickness with the ability to break on the ball and make plays in the defensive backfield. On offense, Worthington has tremendous skills which are built around his uncanny ability to cut on a dime when he finds the smallest crease and then explode past defenders and upfield.
"While many schools may look at Worthington primarily for defense, his skills are somewhat reminiscent of NC State star Darrell Blackman when he was a senior in high school. He may not be the same, pure tailback that Blackman was, but Worthington possesses similar athleticism, speed and quickness." -- Recruiting Analyst Steve Williams
