After running 4.32 and 4.33-second 40-yard dashes at the Shrine Bowl combine
held in Asheville, NC earlier this year, RB Darius Spencer proved that was no fluke as he blistered
the artificial surface at Bank of America Stadium last Saturday. He finished
with an eye-popping 4.37-second time and proved himself as one of the state’s
fastest prospects.
At 5-9, 174 pounds, Spencer starred for AC Reynolds High School in Asheville
last year at running back- finishing the season with 1,300 yards rushing and 18
touchdowns en route to all-conference honors.
Blessed with amazing acceleration and speed, Spencer has attracted the
interest of several schools. The rising junior said he’s received offers from
East Carolina, NC State, UNC and South Carolina.
Spencer has listed Tennessee as his top school on several occasions but he
named a new leader this past weekend.
"Tennessee was my favorite but I really hadn’t heard much from them so I’ve
been leaning towards going to East Carolina," said Spencer.
Spencer said a previous trip to Greenville and the amount of interest he’s
received from the Pirate’s staff has been enough to put them on top.
"I like the academics," he said. "I like the staff there, too. I’ve known
them for a while. I went down there on a visit, met with the coaches and had a
good time. I went with a friend that was being recruited by them and the same
recruiter (WR coach Donnie Kirkpatrick) has been talking to me about their
school."
Spencer plans a return trip to Greenville this summer and he’ll make a trip
to Columbia, SC as well.
"I’m also looking at South Carolina and I’m going to their camp in June," he
said. "I’ll also be going to ECU’s camp on June 16th."
